The Space Buzz VR experience was organised by the International School Breda’s Eco-Schools coordinator in collaboration with teaching and facilities staff. The experience was booked through the Space Buzz Education Programme, which offers mobile VR visits to schools. Coordination involved liaising with the Space Buzz team in advance to arrange logistics, including scheduling, student groupings, technical setup, and health and safety considerations.

On the day, staff ensured smooth transitions between sessions, supported students during the VR experience, and facilitated post-activity reflection. The activity was planned to link meaningfully with both our curriculum and our Eco-Schools themes, and formed part of our broader efforts to embed sustainability awareness across subject areas.

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Link the experience to real learning goals – Choose an activity that connects directly to your Eco-Schools themes or curriculum. For us, Space Buzz supported learning in science, sustainability, and global citizenship all at once. Plan ahead and coordinate with staff – Involve relevant teachers early to help with logistics, scheduling, and follow-up activities. This ensures smoother organisation and better integration across subjects. Think about the impact, not just the event – A powerful experience is great, but make space for reflection and action afterward. We used follow-up discussions and creative responses to help students process what they saw and translate it into meaningful change. Include every student – Make sure the activity is accessible to all learners, including EAL and SEN students. Experiences like VR can be especially inclusive if supported properly. Tell your story – Take photos, gather student quotes, and share what you’ve done. It celebrates success and inspires others within your school community (and beyond!). Highly recommended for other schools if you get a chance.

  • Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: We are proud of this activity because it offered students a powerful, emotional connection to sustainability that goes beyond what they could possibly learn in the classroom. Through virtual reality, they experienced what astronauts describe as the Overview Effect — a sense of awe and responsibility that comes from seeing Earth as one fragile, interconnected system. We had the chance to see and hear about the jungles, ice caps, algae in the sea, overfishing and erosion from a completely different angle giving us a better overall view of how interconnected Earth's systems are and how urgently we need to protect them. This experience sparked meaningful conversations about our impact on the planet and inspired students to think more deeply about the role they play in protecting it. Many expressed a renewed motivation to act — whether by reducing waste, conserving energy, or educating others. We’re especially proud that the activity reached students of all backgrounds and learning styles. It combined technology, science, and citizenship in a way that was memorable, inclusive, and aligned perfectly with the values of the Eco-Schools programme.
