Activiteit/evenement

The Director of the spring musical had the idea of involving relevant student groups in the spring 2026 production of Little Mermaid Jr. She asked both the high school Marine Club and the high school students on the Eco-team to help make stage props out of recycled materials. The Eco-Team students recognized that recycling, reusing and repurposing stage props is crucial for theater productions to minimize environment impact, reduce costs, and foster creative design. So, in partnership with with HS art teacher, the made two fish costumes out of recycled materials.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Communication is essential when working on this kind of collaborative project. The students needed constant communication to ensure that their props not only could be created out of recycled materials, but also fit the needs of the theater production. In our case, one part of this project actually didn't work out. The theater director forgot that she had also asked a group of MS students to work on coral props. Those students spent several hours working on collecting plastic bottles and converting them into usable props, but then there was no place for them on stage. In this case, luckily, an alternate location for their coral props was found. They were displayed next to the concession stand outside of the theater on the days of the performance.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Theater productions can produce significant waste, so using recycled materials can have a positive impact on reducing landfill and carbon emissions. Also, this was good example of collaboration between the theater and art departments. The two fish were used on stage during the 'Under the Sea' scene. This assignment generated a lot of enthusiasm among the students. They had to independently decide on the size, materials and design of the fish costumes. The final result is very cute and the students will be able to see the results of their efforts when they see the performance.

In February 2026, the students in middle school (age 10-14) division of the Eco-team decided to analyze the current effectiveness and accuracy of waste sorting in the school cafeteria. At present, there are food bins for waste disposal in the cafeteria: PMD, food, paper, statiegeld and general. For one week, the students focused mainly on food waste. They went through the food waste bin each day to see if incorrect items had been dropped in or not. They removed any non-food items, and then weighed the trash. Their discoveries included facts like: 8-15 non-food items dropped in the GFT bin each day, and 6.5 to 16.7 kg of food waste per day. Meanwhile, at least 9 cans a day incorrectly placed in the PMD instead of the statiegeld bin.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Getting representatives from as many of the stakeholders as possible is helpful. In our situation, the cafeteria staff helped and encouraged the students, the science department lent a scale, and teachers agreed to let students come late to class so that the measurements could be taken. It's also helpful to have the students pre-made a chart to fill in their findings. In our case, our chart included: date, incorrect items after MS lunch, incorrect items after HS lunch, weight of food waste, and general observations.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: We are proud that the students took on the challenge of digging through the food trash each day, and that the results have informed and inspired them about what next steps need to be taken. They are going to start an education campaign now for their peers about correct food sorting. Their plan includes face-to-face conversations, games and posters. They are also going to meet with the high school students of the Eco team, as some of the problems and solutions need to occur during the high school lunch period.

De uitwissiling is georganiseerd door de begeleiders vanuit Spanje en de leidingevende in Nederland. Het eco-team heeft wel nagedacht over een tof programma wat de Spanjaarden hier in Nederland kunnen doen. Daarnaast hebben leerlingen van het eco-team de activiteiten begeleid. Het was een uitwisseling om van elkaar te leren over hoe een eco-team in elkaar zit en wat ze zoal doen op een school.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: De uitwisseling met een ander land is onwijs inspirerend. De leerlingen uit het eco-team hebben nog steeds contact met Spanjaarden en wisselen ook nog steeds ideeën uit met elkaar. De activiteiten die zijn georganiseerd waren niet allemaal even 'groen' en 'duurzaam', maar wel laagdrempelig. Deze laagdrempelige geeft wel ruimte om ideeën uit te wisselen. Deze ideeën zijn net zo waardevol.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Dit was een mooie unieke kans om van elkaar te leren. Het eco-team voelt zich hierdoor echt gezien, dat leerlingen en docenten interesse hebben in wat zijn doen aan duurzaamheid. En dat dit dus ook grenzen over gaat! Hopelijk komt er in 2026 een uitwisseling de andere kant op, zodat de leerlingen kunnen zien wat de Spanjaarden hebben geleerd van de uitwisseling en of ze al verder zijn met het opzetten van een eco-team.
• School: Bonhoeffercollege

De leerlingen van het eco-team hebben deze activiteit volledig zelf georganiseerd. De leerlingen vinden de school te kaal/kil en absoluut niet groen. Daarom kwam het idee om alle brugklassen een klassenplant mee te geven. De klas moet hier zorg voor dragen en aan het einde van het schooljaar krijgen de verschillende klassen 'punten' voor hun plant. De groenste, mooiste, grootste etc. Deze punten worden tellen mee voor de brugcup. Brugcup is een wedstrijd onder de brugklassen die het hele brugklas jaar duurt. De leerlingen van het eco-team zijn alle brugklassen langs gegaan met een eigen gemaakte powerpoint en adoptiecertificaat! En zodoende alle 10 de planten uitgedeeld.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Geef niet op bij tegenslagen. Zoals bij onze actie dat er geen plantjes geleverd konden worden door het plantenasiel. Er zijn altijd andere mogelijkheden (gratis) als je met zijn allen de schouders er weer onder steekt komt het echt wel goed. Luister ook niet naar negatieve reacties op acties die je organiseert. De meeste leerlingen en collegas zijn harstikke blij met de acties die je organiseert.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Het was van voor tot eind de verdienste van het eco-team. In eerste instantie was het een idee dat alle klassen een klant adopteerden uit het asiel. Het plantenasiel had helaas niet genoeg planten en andere asielen in de buurt reageerden helaas niet. Gelukkig na een oproep in de nieuwsbrief aan collega's of er nog stekjes waren, kwam een hele lieve collega met 10! stekjes aan van een 'makkelijke' prachtige plant.
