One of our student-run clubs in the high school is called the North Sea Marine Club. It is comprised of 29 students between the ages of 14-18 who passionately care about the ocean and want to protect it. In January, the decided to create two interactive lessons about the ocean for primary school students: one for students ages 3-8 and the other for students ages 8-10. The goals of their lesson were to foster a love for the ocean, explain the immense scale of plastic pollution and why plastic in the ocean is a problem, and share practical steps that the students can take to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean.

  • Waarom ben je trots op deze les?: The high school students made a point of adjusting the content, language complexity and the songs in the two presentations they gave, to fit the ages of their audience. And besides sharing information, they were also able to act as role models for the younger students, demonstrating that it is cool to care about the ocean and to take action to clean it up.
  • Welke tips wil je aan andere Eco-Teams geven met betrekking tot deze les?: The tip the student presenters would like to share is that to engage young audiences, make sure your presentative is interactive as well as informative. In this case, they made a quiz about ocean animals and they found two interactive songs about ocean animals, with motions for the students to sing along and dance to.
