International School Breda

This is a new event this year with all initiative coming from the students. There were 2 markets which were organised by a team of DP1 and MYP5 students. They collected donations of toys, clothes and books from our school community then after organsing everything they had a market for all our students and parents and sold the items for 1 - 2 euros. Anything that was not sold was donated to the local kringloop. There were 2 editions of this market. One before Christmas and one in the Spring. This is a summary as written by Reem Abadi - DP1 Student: “The main purpose of the ISB Shop and See Eco Club is to raise money for different school needs and to support students in particular. At the same time, we would like to contribute to saving the planet from fast fashion. For this, we take different clothes donated from students, make sure they are in a good state, and then sell them at low prices. This will not only lessen the amount of waste generated for clothes, but it will also inculcate a sense of using sustainable fashion and, simultaneously, help in raising money to support the school. I will be a member of the stock management and pricing group. This will involve sorting the donations made, taking inventory, and pricing the clothes at an affordable rate but ensuring this reflects in quality. This part of the project helps in ensuring that we make quality, second-hand clothes available to the students and in a manner that will help our fund-raising and sustainability goals. This project has scope for rich learning outcomes. Collaboration is important, as from it, the successfulness of the project is highly dependent. This means we will have to work with other members of the club to manage donations and plan the sales process in order for everything to go well. This experience will develop our communication and team coordination skills. Global Value: At the core of our initiative, this teaches positive actions and behaviors that play an important role in development. We support bigger environmental sustainability by reusing our clothes and not demanding fast fashion. We enable ourselves to understand how local action can have a global impact with respect to climate change and resource conservation. This activity will be undertaken throughout the whole academic year under the guidance of Mrs. Van Zundert.”

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Allow the students to decide what they want to see, when and what will be done with the money. I think it is empowering for the students to have agency over what happens with the money they raise. It is also powerful that all money goes back to school to be used for the students.
  • Onderwijstype: Voortgezet onderwijs
  • Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: We are very proud of this not only because of the effort that the ISB Shop & See Team put in, but also because all of the takings made in the market were spent back in the school again for the students. Any club / body in school were able to apply for some funding (max of €50) and give explanations about how they wanted to use the money. All money was raised by the students and went back to the students whilst also showing everyone the importance of buying second hand and donating to the kringloop. The students worked together as a team and the mix of students means that those who set up this project this year and had leading roles will be able to hand the reins on to the current MYP5's to carry on the activity next year. We really see it as the start of something that can be long running in our school.
