Communicatie-uiting/actie

Katherine MacKenzie

Making a new Garden area at the South campus

A group of students in the Nature & Greenery theme. "We have decided to plant a garden in our new South school building as part of the Eco-Club. There is a community garden in which we will be gardening. We have also decided to invite others from our class to join us on this Activity/Project, to create more of an event. We are also creating this SASA to be an opportunity for others from our class to take place in an activity and/or project."

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven over communicatie van jullie Eco-Team?: Sometimes getting the permission to do this stuff can take a long time, so don't get demotivated.
  • Wat was het doel van deze communicatie-actie en wie wilde jullie bereiken?: We will be helping create more wildlife in our community/environment. We will be helping attract more insects such as bees which will help pollination in the area. We want the garden to be accessible to all students and members of the community. We have worked on another community garden but it is closer to our new campus so it's quite far away now. We now have the permission to do this and the equipment. We are collaborating with another group who is doing the same at the South east campus and we raised money already. We need to plant the flowers and plants at the right times throughout the year for their season.
  • Hoe hebben jullie dit georganiseerd/met wie?: We organised it within the Eco-Club meetings and then also in our mentor class to get other students involved who are not members of the Eco-Club. We have also organised a lesson with some tips from a gardener who will tell us the best plants to have in this climate and how to look after them! We haven't got a photo of it finished yet because we're still busy with it! So there is a picture of a cross-campus meeting we had to plan it!

Transport Awareness for staff, parents & students

A group of students working on the theme of Transport. We split up to take polls on the number of cars coming to each campus (luckily we found that the majority of students travel by bike, public transport or walking!).

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven over communicatie van jullie Eco-Team?: Try to account for all transport, as well as encouraging electric cars, try to promote cycling, walking and public transport. You could also set up car-pooling of students from the same neighbourhoods.
  • Wat was het doel van deze communicatie-actie en wie wilde jullie bereiken?: In this service activity, the need we have found for our project is that people driving gasoline and diesel cars are slowly polluting the environment with greenhouse gases. This is due to the fact that gasoline and diesel are fossil fuels and excessive use of them has caused an increase in global temperatures by 0.6 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. This value will continuously increase in the future. We need to slow down the amount of gasoline and diesel used and we plan on doing this by encouraging people to switch to eco-friendly cars. In the school's newsletter, every week we will include a section where there will be a few paragraphs discussing different topics (a new topic every week) under which switching to eco-friendly cars will benefit people. These topics will be environment, economy, ethical and social. Activity Aim Our aim of this project is to improve the Earth’s environment by telling people about renewable energy and motivating people to drive cleaner vehicles that don’t pollute the environment as much. We will achieve this by using persuading language and true facts which may surprise readers. We will achieve global value by increasing our understanding of how the world is affected by fossil fuel-based cars and by being involved in stopping the issue. We will achieve collaboration by working together throughout the whole project and being aware of our responsibilities while working on the project in order to achieve our goal successfully.
  • Hoe hebben jullie dit georganiseerd/met wie?: We organised it via talking in mentor classes, at Eco-Club meetings and discussing it within the Climate Change theme with the subtopic of transport. We decided to do this after Earth day inspired us.

Finding out the bin needs in the school

A group of students in the Litter & Waste Theme

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven over communicatie van jullie Eco-Team?: Try to tell other students as you are doing this so that they stop littering
  • Wat was het doel van deze communicatie-actie en wie wilde jullie bereiken?: For our service activity, my group and I are going to help stop people from littering. What we will be doing is that we will put posters on walls and lamps above garbage disposals telling them to stop littering and throw the garbage in the bins. This idea came because we see garbage on the streets almost everywhere and so people would either step on a can with a drink in it or they would forgetfully throw away candy wrappers or drop cigarette butts on the floor. This is horrible for the environment and so this is why my group and I are making posters directing people to the nearest garbage disposals so they won’t litter. The posters will tell the people what would happen if they litter. So our plan is to hang the posters in the school and in neighborhoods putting the posters on a wall or lamp and to get people's awareness just so they could help the environment by not littering anymore. For our three learning outcomes, we picked: Global Value, Collaboration and Initiative. We picked Collaboration because we expect to work together on putting up the posters, promoting our idea and if we put them in larger places, we will have to do it in groups. We have shown initiatives because even though people throwing away trash is common, we have never seen people making posters showing where the nearest trash can is. We are showing Global Value by raising awareness by people so they help keeping this planet safe and by telling others not to litter. It may be a simple idea, but if it works, it will definitely change how often people will throw away their trash and by helping the environment move further. Activity Aim The aim of our project is to promote throwing away trash to our community and all the other communities. We hope by doing this there will be a decrease of trash being thrown on the ground. After the 2-month long project in February, where we will be picking up trash twice a week for 8 weeks. We hope that the school and the surrounding communities will be cleaner and that they stay clean.

Plastic Bottle Drive

A group of students from the Litter & Waste Theme

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven over communicatie van jullie Eco-Team?: Find a good spot for collection and encourage people not to buy bottles just for this purpose but to bring bottles they have anyway and maybe to ask friends and neighbours to save theirs too.
  • Wat was het doel van deze communicatie-actie en wie wilde jullie bereiken?: This project is together with the Eco-Club. This project consists of us collecting plastic bottles from students in the school. We will collect the bottles by writing an announcement on the newsletter and sharing it with our classmates. there will be a price involved with whoever brings the most plastic bottles. After having collected enough plastic bottles we will be creating a box/bin out of the bottles. The purpose of the box is to be a recycling box where people can put plastic in, which will then be recycled. Our goal for this project is to recycle more plastic and make our information more eco-friendly. My learning outcomes for this project are collaboration, ethics and awareness. We chose collaboration because we will be collaborating in a group to make this project happen. We then chose awareness because we will become more aware of the amount of plastic used by our community . We chose ethics because this sasa project can help show people how much plastic is used and how much plastic can be recycled.
  • Hoe hebben jullie dit georganiseerd/met wie?: A group of other students from the Litter & Waste group, we got the whole primary and secondary school at all three campuses to collect bottles!

Litter Picking at Ams Zuid Station

Each of us contributed to the organisation, we are all in the litter and waste theme of the Eco-Club and are in the same class.

  • Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven over communicatie van jullie Eco-Team?: Make sure to have gloves or litter-pickers!
  • Wat was het doel van deze communicatie-actie en wie wilde jullie bereiken?: People use the area usually for their everyday traveling to school work and home. We have noticed that since it is such a busy and crowded environment that it is often dirty and littered. To make this important location a cleaner and more welcoming environment, we have decided that it is up to us to clean up. We plan to go to the Zuid Metro Station once a week between 11:00 and 11:45 for 6 weeks. We plan to start on the 21st of October 2021 and end on the 25th of November 2021. From this action, we hope to inspire initiative among others and to help recognize that we need to take care of our planet. We will recognize the impact we will create once we start picking up trash because people who walk by will be encouraged to also pick up trash. We also know that this is the right decision to make because our planet is currently dying due to global warming and climate change. Activity Aim: The aim of this project is to clean up Station and pick up the trash around the area. Since station Zuid is the main area for public transportation in the area of Amsterdam Zuid, it is used by tourists as well as locals(workers and school children) it needs to be welcoming to people around the area.
