Activiteit/evenement

De Eco-scan is uitgezet onder de leerlingen en het personeel. Dit is gedaan met een oproep aan alle mentoren en een bericht op de digitale schermen in de school. Zo is in het mentoruur in bijna alle klassen aandacht besteed aan de ECO-scan. Wat resulteerde in goede resultaten. Nu gaan we binnenkort de resultaten bespreken en reflecteren. En natuurlijk de komende activiteiten/projecten hierop organiseren.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Een oproep aan de mentoren werkt erg goed. Die kunnen het dan uitzetten in hun klassen waardoor (bijna) alle leerlingen hier actief aan meedoen. Zo krijg je meteen meer betrokkenheid van het personeel en veel leerlingen doen mee. Het scheelt ook heel veel werk voor het ECO-team. Anders moeten die alles zelf uitzetten.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Dat we eigenlijk best veel antwoorden hebben gehad. Mentoren hebben hier ook wel veel aandacht aan besteed in hun lessen waardoor het thema duurzaamheid meteen meer zichtbaar is geworden in de school. We hadden verwacht dat het niet zo veel zou worden ingevuld, maar dat is dus erg goed gegaan.

Aanpak:
- datum kiezen
- lokaal en film organiseren
- stemmen over welke film het wordt: 2012
- verloop van avond bepalen: introductie Green Team, intro film, gesprek achteraf.

- eigen netwerk uitnodigen (+1)
- organiseren dat er drankjes en hapjes zijn
- op de dag zelf: alles klaarzetten + snacks bestellen

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: - verdeel de taken goed - neem zelf een +1 mee - kies een geschikte film voor alle leeftijden - zorg dat leerlingen zich opgeven, dan weet je hoeveel inkopen je moet doen - communiceer goed met de school: de school moet die avond tot laat open zijn - zorg voor het bespreken van de thematiek in de film, in ons geval: het einde van het leven op aarde.
• Onderwijstype: Voortgezet onderwijs
• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Het was een leuke sociale activiteit ter behoeve van cohesie Green Team. Ook konden nieuwe potentiële Green Team leden (brugklassers) kennis maken met het Green Team en hun activiteiten. Het maakte ons trots omdat door de hele school hingen de flyers van de filmavond. Iedereen kon doen waar die goed in was: de ene maakte een flyer, de ander bereidde het introductie praatje voor en weer iemand anders bakte koekjes.
• School: O.R.S. Lek en Linge

The Director of the spring musical had the idea of involving relevant student groups in the spring 2026 production of Little Mermaid Jr. She asked both the high school Marine Club and the high school students on the Eco-team to help make stage props out of recycled materials. The Eco-Team students recognized that recycling, reusing and repurposing stage props is crucial for theater productions to minimize environment impact, reduce costs, and foster creative design. So, in partnership with with HS art teacher, the made two fish costumes out of recycled materials.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Communication is essential when working on this kind of collaborative project. The students needed constant communication to ensure that their props not only could be created out of recycled materials, but also fit the needs of the theater production. In our case, one part of this project actually didn't work out. The theater director forgot that she had also asked a group of MS students to work on coral props. Those students spent several hours working on collecting plastic bottles and converting them into usable props, but then there was no place for them on stage. In this case, luckily, an alternate location for their coral props was found. They were displayed next to the concession stand outside of the theater on the days of the performance.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Theater productions can produce significant waste, so using recycled materials can have a positive impact on reducing landfill and carbon emissions. Also, this was good example of collaboration between the theater and art departments. The two fish were used on stage during the 'Under the Sea' scene. This assignment generated a lot of enthusiasm among the students. They had to independently decide on the size, materials and design of the fish costumes. The final result is very cute and the students will be able to see the results of their efforts when they see the performance.
• School: American School of the Hague

In February 2026, the students in middle school (age 10-14) division of the Eco-team decided to analyze the current effectiveness and accuracy of waste sorting in the school cafeteria. At present, there are food bins for waste disposal in the cafeteria: PMD, food, paper, statiegeld and general. For one week, the students focused mainly on food waste. They went through the food waste bin each day to see if incorrect items had been dropped in or not. They removed any non-food items, and then weighed the trash. Their discoveries included facts like: 8-15 non-food items dropped in the GFT bin each day, and 6.5 to 16.7 kg of food waste per day. Meanwhile, at least 9 cans a day incorrectly placed in the PMD instead of the statiegeld bin.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Getting representatives from as many of the stakeholders as possible is helpful. In our situation, the cafeteria staff helped and encouraged the students, the science department lent a scale, and teachers agreed to let students come late to class so that the measurements could be taken. It's also helpful to have the students pre-made a chart to fill in their findings. In our case, our chart included: date, incorrect items after MS lunch, incorrect items after HS lunch, weight of food waste, and general observations.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: We are proud that the students took on the challenge of digging through the food trash each day, and that the results have informed and inspired them about what next steps need to be taken. They are going to start an education campaign now for their peers about correct food sorting. Their plan includes face-to-face conversations, games and posters. They are also going to meet with the high school students of the Eco team, as some of the problems and solutions need to occur during the high school lunch period.
