Activiteit/evenement

A group of students passionate about hardware came together in October 2025 to set up a club that would help other students and staff fixing their laptops, tablets, phones and other devices for free, while the opportunity to solve real cases helps the group to keep learning. In order to buy needed parts, the group has relied on donations, the Swap Shop Fund and recycling. For future repairs that take place outside of school or take longer the team of repairers now kindly asks for a donation.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Of course a team of students with the specific skill set and passion for this topic is necessary. It is such a great initiative to promote REPAIRING and RE-USING of items you already have. It also allows for further debates to take place in relation to mass consumption and environmental degradation and often children labour/poor working conditions regarding the extraction of source minerals required to make these devices in the first place.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Times of repair are reduced, the school community is really grateful for and happy with the service provided and those who could not afford a repair cost and even less buying a new device can now get it fixed. It is also a huge learning opportunity for the student team undertaking the repairs, not just in terms of specific technical skills but the soft skills of setting deadlines, meeting the "customers" and dealing with the anxiety of people whose devices have stopped working and they might have lost documents they were working on and other.

Students from the Eco-Team (Environmental Action Group-EAG, residential floor reps, Swap Shop team and Juupu team) sat together and brainstormed ideas on how and when to process all the leftovers from the departing residential students. The school's Sustainability Coordinator reviewed it and suggested some changes. Then the Residential mentors, the residential graduating students, others students in the residence and the Facilities team were informed about the plan so they knew what to expect and could direct students towards the waste collection points.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Students undertook an incredible amount of work, during a very emotional weekend when they were also greeting farewell to peers and close friends. This has to be acknowledged to them and the Sustainability Coordinator made sure to thank them personally and also to acknowledge their efforts in a public email to other students and staff, thanking them for their successful task. A celebration with pizzas is planned for later in June as a thank you to all Eco-Team member efforts this year.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Between 23 and 28 May almost 300 kg of clothing and other items were processed by members of the Eco-Team. Every year with the departure of 95-100+ residential students, after graduation, a big quantity of waste is generated, which in the past was never processed and separated in as much detail because the school used to hire a skip to throw everything in it. This year we have managed to process all stuff collected and separated into donations for external parties, donations to the Design Technology department for textile projects, donations to the Swap Shop and a very small percentage had to be thrown away. With this initiative we have managed to reduced our overall residual waste as a school thus meeting one of our UWC Sustainability waste related targets for this year and part of a 5 year strategy until 2030.

Een van de grootste activiteiten die we dit jaar hebben gedaan, is het aanleggen van een moestuin. We kwamen op het idee om dat te doen doordat wij op het schoolplein een lelijk stukje tegels zagen liggen die eigenlijk niemand gebruikte. Tevens wilde wij graag ons ecoteam zichtbaar maken op het gebied van milieu in onze school, en hoe kan dat nou beter dan met een moestuin? Er was alleen 1 probleem, op die plek viel zeer weinig zonlicht, en als we een moestuin zouden willen maken, is zonlicht toch eigenlijk wel essentieel. Dus gingen we op zoek naar een andere geschikte plek. En die hadden we! We hebben namelijk een ongebruik, groot grasveld waar veel zonlicht valt. Het was vroeger gebruikt als sportveld, maar door de slecht omstandigheden van het gras (veel gaten en dergelijke) was het niet meer veilig om daar met school te sporten, en was het dus als een tijdje ongebruikt. Onder andere door een subsidie van de gemeente hebben we een zogenaamde ‘’Moestuin Coach’’ kunnen inhuren die voor ons 2 prachtige schetsen maakte voor onze moestuin. Uiteindelijk hebben we voor het ontwerp wat voor ons het meest praktische leek (zie figuur 1). Een tijdje later kwamen er Spaanse uitwisselingsstudenten naar ons toe die 2 dagen het begin van de moestuin hebben aangelegd, denk aan de bakken in elkaar zetten, de bakken neerzetten, een muurtje metselen en overal waar compost naartoe moest, compost naar brengen. Als je nu uit de ramen van sommige klaslokalen kijkt, dan zie een prachtig begin van een moestuin, vol met bakken waar al planten in groeien, hele stellages die meer dan 3 meter zijn voor de klimplanten, torens met zakken compost, een grote watertank en een mooi begin aan het overkappinkje voor alle benodigdheden.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Als wij tips zouden mogen geven aan andere ecoteams dan zou de grootste tip zijn om iemand van school te hebben die ze aanstuurt om dingen te doen, die orde en overzicht heeft en die toch een korter lijntje heeft met de schoolleiding en met andere docenten en hulpdingen. Ook zal een grote tip zijn om gewoon te beginnen. Wij hebben terug kijkend lang gebrainstormd over wat we zouden doen, misschien wel iets te lang, maar als je gewoon begint dan zie je dan wel wat er beter kan en weinig dingen zijn definitief dus zouden altijd veranderd kunnen worden.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: Wij zijn erg trots om onze moestuin die veel groter en mooier is gebleken dan we ooit hadden durven denken en we zijn zeker van plan om deze stijgende lijn door te zetten naar volgend jaar om van dit al hele mooie begin een nog mooier eindproduct te maken dat we nog jaren zullen zien!
• School: Sint Oelbert VWO

In 2024-2025 a former ESS teacher of our school, Nathan Hunt, leading the Permaculture Garden, dreamed with his students the possibility of growing a tiny forest in our campus, following the Miyawaki technique, to enhance biodiversity and boost climate resilience. The planning work started in summer 2024, also negotiating with the Advancement Office ways to secure funds for young trees, seeds and the work that was required, such as a digger machine to excavate some of the soil. Under his coordination, the landscape work took place, involving some external hired work, service hours of students and staff in the Permaculture Garden team, Roots & Shoots and other Eco-Team members and other students (also parents) who lent a hand, digging, planting, watering, donating plants or other materials. After planting, mulching and watering took a lot of hours of work because it was a very hot spring and summer.

• Welke tips wil je andere Eco-teams geven bij het organiseren van een activiteit/evenement?: Coordination detail is really important for such a big scale project: timeline, volunteer rotas and clear tasks have to be very clear for everyone involved. When resources and time are requested from the community, a good communication and visual strategy is very important to ensure engagement, shared expectations and reaching goals.

• Waarom zijn jullie hier trots op?: In February 2025 the works begun and before the summer we had a cute tiny forest in place with nearly 300 trees and bushes of more than 25 native species in only 100 square meters in our "island". We are proud of the community spirit that this collaborative project fostered and celebrated. The coordinated and committed work of staff, students and parents made a 'Green Dream' become a reality and after months in which the forest was conceptually designed, the soil prepared, all the trees and bushes planted, the mulching took place and volunteers watered the new plants during the summer break, we today have a thriving Tiny Forest. This Tiny Forest is an example that where there is will, there are endless possibilities and when there is a common goal, everything is possible.
